Cuba–the beautiful country in the Caribbean
Cuba was discovered in 1492 by Christopher Columbus and became a Spanish colony. The native population of the island was almost completely wiped out in the subsequent period. The situation remained unchanged until the middle of the 19th century. Cuba was an oppressed country.
Since their victory over the Batista dictatorship in January 1959, the Cuban people have had to resist attacks carried out by terrorist organizations made up of Cuban exiles in Miami. A diplomatic, media and economic war accompanied by acts of terror and sabotage that has taken the lives of 3,478 Cuban citizens to date. Unfortunately, US President G.W. Bush did not try and negotiate an end to terrorist activities against Cuba, but declared Cuba to be a "rogue state" that endangers the security of the USA and supports international terrorism. President Bush now recognizes that this was one of his major mistakes.
To detect and prevent acts of terrorism against Cuba, 5 Cuban patriots infiltrated and collected data about groups of exiled Cubans who were planning to carry out further terrorist attacks. The evidence was then given to the FBI. This was subsequently used to prevent at least 170 attacks against Cuban institutions and personalities. However, the five Cubans were sentenced to life in prison for spying. Doubts about the legality of the case have even been expressed by representatives of the US Senate in the media.
The Chairman of DMW Günther Meinel has declared his support for the wives of the five incarcerated Cubans in their human rights struggle! Members of the German Parliament, the EU Parliament, high-ranking politicians throughout the world, prominent artists, and top lawyers such as Leonard Weinglass have joined the protest against this injustice and are demanding that the trial be reopened.
All the major human rights organizations have asked US President Obama to intervene in the interests of justice and human rights. DMW was also asked to use its network to defend the human rights of the Cuban Five, which it is doing. Günther Meinel, DMW Chairman, assured the wives of the five incarcerated Cubans that he supports them in their struggle to have their human rights recognized!
