Istanbul (dpa) - Turkey's highest religious authority, Mehmet Görmez, has criticized the German debate regarding the validity of circumcision. "Our friends giving such serious thought to circumcision should begin by eliminating the injustices faced by Muslim children," said the President of the Presidency of Religious Affairs in Turkey following a report by the agency Anadolu.
In a meeting with the Chairman of the non-governmental organization Diplomats International, Görmez complained that globalization has produced a global network, but no corresponding universal tolerance among religions. In June, the Cologne regional court ruled that the ritual circumcision of boys is a criminal offense. The decision has met with opposition in Jewish and Muslim communities and in Turkey.
