Under this motto, the World Summit of the DMW Diplomats International Organization took place on November 3, 2023, in Cyprus, meticulously prepared by Serhat Akpınar, the President of the Cypriot branch of the organization. Numerous ministers and the President of Cyprus also supported the event, ensuring its complete success.
Held at the Spectrum Congress Center of Girne American University, the summit was attended by ambassadors, diplomats, members of parliament, scientists, politicians, and businesspeople, along with DMW representatives and members from around the world.
Since President Prof. Günther Meinel could not attend in person, his opening speech was read on his behalf.
In it, he emphasized that human rights are the foundation of our shared humanity. It is our collective duty to ensure that these rights are respected, promoted, and protected everywhere in the world. This includes advocating for those who have no voice. As diplomats, we are in a unique position to advance this perspective. We should remember that our most important duty in the realm of international affairs is to serve humanity. “Through our collective efforts, we can transform the international stage into a more just, compassionate, and humane arena for all.”
He also specifically drew attention to the division of Cyprus, which remains an unresolved global issue despite numerous efforts.
Vice President Halil Sert then elaborated in his speech that human values serve as a balancing factor, the most universal, sacred, and effective remedy against aggression, which predominantly affects civilians and children. The first steps in the right direction are mutual respect, tolerance, and empathy for one another, to achieve progress through solidarity.
Sert emphasized: “We live in a world where development is constantly gaining importance,” and we should not forget that behind all these innovations and developments, there are always people. We must start by listening to each other, seeing other perspectives, focusing on social justice, finding sustainable solutions, and driving change through small gestures in daily life.
Dr. Serhat Akpınar, in his speech, highlighted the world's problems and stressed that humanity is the essential characteristic of human coexistence. It is not limited to specific regions, religions, or ideologies, but is universally applicable. As the Secretary-General of the Democratic Party, he specializes in this as a fundamental principle. At the same time, as the Rector of Girne American University, he leads students from 120 countries to become highly educated specialists in their fields.
The other speakers also aimed to draw attention to the need for more humanity in the world to secure peace, emphasizing that diplomacy has a crucial role in resolving and preventing conflicts.
Once again, the German singer Miriam Geiger demonstrated through her musical contribution to the event that singing and diplomacy belong together. Through this, hearts and souls are opened, allowing for better access to people and tuning them into the theme of a more peaceful world.
